Sunday Mornings

We believe that God can be worshiped in a variety of ways, and what truly matters is not the style but the Spirit. Worship isn’t about the songs we sing or the format we follow—it’s about encountering God, who is present with us through the Holy Spirit. We offer 2 service styles and our hope is that you will experience God’s presence and draw closer to Him.  Both services are also live streamed.

Pastor Kelly McCuaig brings a passionate and energetic preaching style that is deeply rooted in Scripture, with a strong emphasis on making more and maturing disciples of Jesus Christ. His sermons flow from a theology of grace and holiness, calling us to grow in both faith and Christlike character. His teaching invites us to think deeply, live boldly, and walk closely with Christ.

Catch Our Live Streams

Both Sunday Services are live streamed on Youtube. Head HERE to find those!

Sunday FAQ’s

What do I wear on a Sunday?

Come as you are! Most people dress casually, but you’ll see a wide range of styles—from jeans and t-shirts to business casual. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and feels appropriate for a place of worship.

How long are Sunday services?

Our worship services last around 1 hour 15 minutes or so each Sunday.

What is the worship style there?

We offer two worship services, each with a distinct style. Our 8:30 AM service follows a traditional format with hymns, while our 10:45 AM service is modern, featuring more contemporary worship music. We believe that God can be worshiped in a variety of ways, and what truly matters is not the style but the Spirit. Worship isn’t about the songs we sing or the format we follow—it’s about encountering God, who is present with us through the Holy Spirit. No matter which service you choose, our hope is that you will experience God’s presence and draw closer to Him.

Where do I park?

The easiest place for you to park is in the West Parking Lot accessible by West Shaw St., North Alameda St., and West Stevens St. Street parking is also available all around the campus.

Will I be called out as a visitor?

Your presence with us on Sunday morning in and of itself is something that we’re so thankful for! So, no, we won’t expect anything else from you. You don’t need to worry about being called out or being expected to introduce yourself.

Is Communion Offered?

  • Yes, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper each Sunday here at First Methodist Church. The New Testament instructs us that “as often as [we] eat this bread and drink the cup, [we] proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26). We believe these words guide us to come to the Communion Table as often as we gather together in worship.
  • All are welcome to participate in Communion on Sundays, regardless of age, background, or denominational affiliation. There is no such thing as a “methodist” table; there is only God’s Table! Anyone who earnestly repents of their sin and longs to draw closer to God through Jesus Christ the Lord is welcome.

Do I need to bring a Bible?

We encourage everyone to bring a personal Bible to worship. If you don’t have one, please let us know, and we’ll provide one for you. Additionally, there are Bibles available in each row of seating, and all scripture references used during worship are typically projected on the screens.

Our Mission

We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread scriptural holiness across the city of Carlsbad and throughout the globe.

Our Vision

Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we envision multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ throughout Carlsbad and around the world who flourish in scriptural holiness as we worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.

Our Beliefs

At First Methodist, we are part of the Global Methodist Church, a movement rooted in the love and grace of Jesus Christ. Our beliefs shape everything we do, including how we worship, serve, and grow in faith together.

God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  • We believe in one true God, who has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • God the Father is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.
  • God the Son, Jesus Christ, is fully God and fully human. He lived, died, and bodily rose again to restore our relationship with God.
  • God the Holy Spirit empowers and guides us, transforming hearts and lives.

The Bible: God's Word for Us

The Holy Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is God’s inspired Word and our ultimate guide for faith and daily life. It contains everything we need to know for salvation and spiritual growth.

Salvation: Grace Upon Grace

Salvation is a gift of grace from God—something we can’t earn but receive by faith in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we are forgiven, made new, and invited into an eternal relationship with God. The journey of saving grace that God invites us to includes:

  • Prevenient Grace – God’s love at work in our lives before we even realize it.
  • Justifying Grace – The moment we turn to Jesus in faith and receive forgiveness.
  • Sanctifying Grace – A lifelong process of growing in love and holiness.

The Church: A Community of Faith

The Church is the Body of Christ, called to worship, serve, and share God’s love with the world. Every believer has a role to play, and we encourage active participation in worship, small groups, and acts of mission and service in the world.

Baptism: A Sign of God’s Grace

Baptism is a sacrament of God’s grace, signifying new life in Christ and entrance into the church family.

We baptize both children and adults because we believe baptism is about God’s work in us, not just our response. Because Baptism is about God’s actions, not ours, we believe God’s grace is at work in various modes of water baptism: sprinkling, pouring, and full immersion.

  • Infant & Child Baptism – We baptize children as a sign of God’s grace already at work in their lives. As they mature, they are invited to confirm their faith as they make a public profession of their faith beliefs before the congregation.
  • Adult Baptism – Those who come to faith after childhood are baptized through their own profession of faith in Jesus Christ.

Holy Communion: The Lord’s Supper

We celebrate Holy Communion each week as a sacred meal where we find ourselves in the story of Christ’s death and resurrection and experience the real presence of his sacrificed and risen life among us. There is no such thing as a “Methodist table.” We believe in God’s Table, and this Table is open to all who earnestly repent of their sin and long to draw closer to God through Jesus Christ.

All Are Called: The Priesthood of All Believers

We believe God calls every Christian to live out their faith in daily life. Every believer is gifted for ministry, whether in their workplace, family, or community.

  • The Call of Laity – Laypeople are called to serve in worship, mission, discipleship, and daily witness. They are essential in spreading the Gospel and living out their faith in the world.
  • The Call of Clergy – Some are called to set-apart ministry, serving as pastors, teachers, and shepherds of the church. These clergy are trained and ordained to preach, administer the sacraments, and equip the Church for mission and ministry.

We affirm and celebrate the calling of both clergy and laity and believe in equipping every believer to fulfill their God-given purpose.

Christian Living: Faith in Action

Faith isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about how we live it out.

  • We seek to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
  • We are called to pursue holiness—a life transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are committed to justice, mercy, and spreading scriptural holiness in the world.

Our Hope: Eternal Life with Christ

We believe in the resurrection of the dead and the life to come. Jesus will return, and His kingdom will have no end. In Him, we have the promise of eternal joy and restoration.

The Global Methodist Church

In its 133-year history our church has belonged to three Methodist Denominations: The Methodist Episcopal South (since 1890), The Methodist Church (since 1939) and The United Methodist Church (since 1968).

On May 1, 2022 a brand new Methodist Denomination was launched called, The Global Methodist Church. And on February 5, 2023 our church voted by over 90% to join. We believe the Global Methodist Church will be a better home for our congregation because of its conservative stance on social issues and its traditional interpretation of scripture and doctrine.

The Global Methodist Church is a Holy Spirit inspired movement with a mission to “make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly and witness boldly.”

If you would like to learn more about the beliefs and structure of The Global Methodist Church, please visit globalmethodist.org or contact our pastoral staff.
